High school math

Is there any adults out there that have actually used math and If you didn't get it taught to you, you wouldn't get a job or be able to succeed? Obviously not unless your talking about basic math... So why teach it?

  • 💥V3NGANC3💥

Well, many jobs do require advanced math, mathematicians, scientists, astronauts, not to mention all the other worse jobs. If you want to flip burgers then math doesn't matter. If you want a meaningful job you better make it count

I don't agree. The jobs you listed above only make up less than 1% of the world. And not to mention all of those jobs require you to have a degree so this proves my point even further because if you actually DO need advanced math take the courses in COLLEGE! Not in high school. It's a waste of time because if you ask the majority of high school graduates if they can do your homework they probably wouldn't be able to do it without having to look up answers to refresh there memory

I use math EVERY day, and not just basic math... I challenge you to build a house without it!

Lol thanks for turning my usual "hate school" mood into me sounding ignorant.

It is ignorant, although it's not really your fault. Even if you don't use the exact things you get taught (and you will), maths teaches you to think logically and understand patterns and structures

Look at all the millionaires and billionaires who have dropped out of high school and college.

If you really need and want to learn something, you don't need to go to a school to do it. Teach yourself. But, if you need to go get a diploma to get the job you want, then do so.

    My 1 + 1 cents. ✌️

That's pretty much exactly what I wanted to say but couldn't think of way to do so. Thank you!

Just wanted to say. Look at all the billionaire graduates. And the few dropouts. The billionaire dropouts weren't normal kids. They dropped out because their minds didn't work right for school, not just cuz they didn't like math. You aren't ignorant, nobody "likes" math. But it is necessary.

Why does highschool teach math, history,English, science, etc? It's diverse for a reason! It's so when you go to college you know what field you are interested in.(similarly with 101 classes) As for why they teach ADVANCE math, it's not really that advance its just that you don't have the particular skill sets needed to prosper in this class. I'm sorry to say it's not that the class is stupid. But, thus doesn't mean that you're stupid, it just means that you are on the top of a bell curve or maybe a standard deviation or two to the left.
Now what if you don't go to college. Then at least you'll have a basic understanding of most topics and not grow up to be an ignorant prick.

The reason why kids go to school is to
    A.) learn the basics
B.) lock them up somewhere so parents can work
C.) to peak a students interest in what occupation they want to go into by portraying many options.

Most of the "billionaires" already knew what they wanted to do with their life and had the intelligence to do so. Most people are not blessed with this ability.

Also to use that as a valid argument is very statistically incorrect. Compare the number of billionaire dropouts to the number of dropouts. Also compare the number of billionaire high school graduate or college to the number of high school graduate or college .

Gade nailed it. Being able to attack a problem (specifically problems that are not at all math related) logically will get one far in life. A diverse understanding of math and advanced math clearly aid in fundamental thinking. The earlier in life one learns the process the better they would be prepared down the line. Some people despise math while others find all aspects of math quite simple.

  • TheIOnlyIGod

Well now I just feel lazy and stupid haha. But thank you all for inspiring me to actually do my homework tonight ;)

Math & I always had an uneasy relationship when I was younger. We would sit on opposite sides of the room & glare @ each other. I did it, but i didnt want to. Then I got older & went back to school & had to take more of it. Suddenly I wished I had a better grasp of it. It had become relavent to graduating as a paramedic. Once I had a reason to do it I found that I wasn't bad at it. Drug dose calculations and drip rates need to be done quickly & accurately. I also use it as a firefighter, especially when I'm using the pump. I need to be able to calculate friction loss, elevation, incoming pressure, volume all at the same time to get the right pressure to the nozzle. It isn't advanced math, but it is out there. Keep plodding through it & it will end up paying off.

I use math. I need to know how many patties to throw on the grill. I slept a lot in high school. Well rested but didn't learn much drooling on my math book.

In all reality the subjects taught are really not going to help you in everyday life. There are going to be situations where you need to use your skills. School is so you can handle all of the situations because many you need to handle to succeed. You could live without most taught after the elementary (basic) level, but you will soon see that you lack the skills that educated people have. Having a broad education will make you have extremely good decision making skills. College education is so you can refine your skills so you are elite at your job because if you are not, your out of a job.

Whoever said nobody likes math, I'm in high school and do truly like math. And it's helped me back.

Taking a higher math course in high school means you don't have to take it in college. They are cummilative on one another.

  • EastCoastKing

Since when is advanced math madatory in highschool lol its not in canada anyway

I'm female ... I shop. How the hell would I know when to stop if I didn't use math?
Or how do I plan a budget? How do I know hen I can afford to buy a new car? I can't unless I know math.

  • ▪False▪

    I disagree with this thread.
I like math. A lot, actually.
Math makes perfect sense every time. It's uniform. Unlike literature, history, or most other classes.

All depends on the job. For some of you, the most advanced you'll get is the compounded interest formula.
Others, however, may have to employ higher mathematics. Some of you may even use your skills all the way up to Calculus. Architecture (Probably a gross underestimate) probably uses nothing higher than Euclidian Geometry. If you flip burgers, all you have to know is that three patties go on a triple burger.
Most forms of engineering will probably require Trigonometry and maybe even higher.

Actually you just said math, not advanced math

  • TheIOnlyIGod

Well, if you had a brain you could comprehend that I was pretty much saying you should know basic math but advanced math is not very important at all unless you choose to go down a career path that involves it.
